Laughter Relieves Stress and Builds Relationships
Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. So let us laugh more: by ourselves and with others.
Over the past month we have shared a variety of laughter's personal health benefits, yet the power of laughter is so strong that it deeply impacts our personal relationships as well. Couples who laugh together tend to see a decrease in conflict due to lower levels of stress. This is one of my husband's gifts. He wants me to laugh and deliberately finds ways to do that.
Laughter also provides a more open line of communication and comfort which allows for an overall healthier relationship. Humor has actually become one of the main priorities when searching and building relationships. It allows us to feel that initial attraction as well as continue into lifelong commitments.
Laughter allows a kind and clear mind by releasing endorphins, relaxing muscles and lowering blood pressure allowing one to be less defensive and be more spontaneous. This can also allow problems to be solved more creatively since a well-timed joke can put things into perspective with your partner. The interesting thing is, it is not only about creating laughter with your partner, reminiscing on times of laughter has also shown positive effects. Reminiscing on positive events in general has shown great impact on relationship quality, yet laughter reminiscing has shown even greater.
Grab a family member, friend, or lover, channel past times of laughter while practicing the I Laugh Meditative Movement™ and see how you and your partner feel!
